UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY AS A MULTIMODAL DESIGN ISSUE

In recent years, many research activities have focused on designthat aims to produce universally accessible systems, taking intoaccount special needs of various user groups. These specialneeds are associated with many user factors, such as impairmentsof speech, hearing or vision, cognitive limitations, aging,as well as with various environmental factors [3]. Fields thataddress this problem, such as Usability, Universal Accessibility, UniversalDesign, or Inclusive Design [8] have been developed as relatively independentdomains, but they share many aspects with other human-computerinteraction (HCI) disciplines. However, researchers andpractitioners are often not aware of interconnections among concepts ofuniversal accessibility and “ordinary” HCI. In view of this situation, inthis article we show there is a fundamental connection between multimodalinterface design and universal accessibility, and that awareness ofthese links can help both disciplines. Researchers from these areas mayuse different terminology, but the concepts they use often have essentiallythe same meaning. We propose a unified conceptual frameworkwhere these areas can be joined.
